Might want to take the belts off and run the engine for a moment to make sure it's not the water pump making noise.Pontiac timing chain cover comes off easier than a Chevy because you don't need to drop the oil pan and the balancer is not a press fit.Stuff some rags in front of oil pan to keep trash out.

how about a new camshaft and lifters and of course new timing chain and gears and throw in a new water pump, Heck no i love spending time in my garage when i can. A damper with this problem can fly apart at any time. I just noticed you are in South Africa! A water pump is much easier to repair and replace than the timing chain on a Pontiac motor. The distributor is from the Firebirds original 301 engine and the damper is from one of the 400s. The engine was built with parts from two different 400s, and the timing has never been right. On most V8 engines, timing is checked on the #1 cylinder because it is the first in the firing order. The timing chain is way to loose so it gets replaced but what about the timing gear set should they be replaced also? Aug 19, 2022
